Pollinator-friendly behaviour
Urban citizens can become key actors in pollinator protection in cities. But what are the drivers for pollinator-friendly behaviour in citizens? Ulrike Sturm of the Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science and her colleagues surveyed 111 community gardeners in Berlin and Munich to identify some of these drivers.
The importance of field margins for pollinators
A study by Irene Bottero, Simon Hodge and Jane Stout at Trinity College Dublin confirms the importance of field margins as a semi-natural habitat providing resources for insect pollinators, specifically in the grass-dominated agricultural landscapes of Ireland. Bottero et al. looked at the pollinating insects associated with apple and oilseed rape, and compared the insect fauna of the main crop with that in the field margins.
